Flu cases rise as winter sets in
Cold nights and hot days boost infections
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With the onset of winter, the number of people being affected by the common flu is increasing. As per the District Medical Officer (DMO), the climate which has cold nights combined with hot days is boosting common flu and associated infections.
Around 1,500-1600 patients frequented the Out Patient department of government hospitals this week in Thiruvananthapuram.
The district tops the state in terms of fever cases. Until the beginning of this month, around 1000 people only had come to the OP even on days when it rained heavily. Now, the infections also lasts for a longer time.
“Cross infections have shot up especially as children can bring home fever. Adequate precautions will be taken so as not to contract flu,” said DMO S Jayashankar.
Interestingly, winter fever has risen only in Kottayam, Alappuzha and Kasargod districts. Though officials as usual claim that dengue cases in the district are not alarming, between one and eight dengue cases are confirmed every week. Unlike in earlier times, dengue outbreak has shifted from Nemom block to Vithura area around Nedumangaud.
The cases of dengue in the state had touched 3152 by September this year. It is pertinent to note that in 2014, only 2548 dengue cases were confirmed in the state.
