Heavy downpour floods throughout Nellore district
Highest rainfall was 8.6 cm in Allur
Nellore: Even as the normalcy is returning to flood-affected areas, rains lashed once again in the southern parts of Nellore district on Sunday causing jitters to the people and district officials.
Most parts of the district including Nellore, Sullurpeta, Kota, Gudur, Nayudupeta and Atmakur areas experienced rains on Sunday. An unidentified person washed away while crossing a stre-am at Kavaliyadavalli in A. S. Peta mandal on Sunday.
The average rainfall recorded from 8.30 am to 8 pm is 17.1 mm and total rainfall was 78.6 cm. Highest rainfall was 8.6 cm in Allur, 8.4 cm in Dagadarthi, 6.4 in Vinjamuru and lowest was 0.3 mm in Chillakur.
People living in Sullurpeta mandal are worried over the news about washing away of crest gate of Kalangi reservoir in the upstream as Kalangi river already created havoc in the area during heavy rains ten days back.
What worries people more is a belief that rains that start on Sunday continue till next Sunday as happened from November 15 to 22. Farmers who raised nurseries and started transplantation taking advantage of rains last week are worried over the second round of rains. Moreover, 1,655 tanks in the district are full to their brim and any inflow may cause breaches.
Joint collector A.Md. Imtiaz said that NDRF teams are stationed at Kavali, Gudur, Nellore and Nayudupeta to make use of their service to deal with any eventuality. Essential commodities also transported to all vulnerable habitations in advance. A control room has been established at the Collectorate with a landline number 0861-2331477.
