Chennai: Tension prevailed in Tambaram after a 17-year old youth slipped off the footboard of a bus and came under its wheels on Monday morning. The accident has led to protests in the area with residents claiming that there weren’t enough buses in the area over the last few days.
Suresh, son of Shanmugam a private college employee from Agahram village in Selaiyur, was a Class 12 student at Thiruvancherry Government School and had left for at 8am. However, he had to return to his house in Selaiyur to retrieve a book that he had left behind and took the Thriruvancherry to Tambaram Camp Road. Suresh was hanging out of the overcrowded bus and fell when the vehicle hit a pothole. The rear wheels of the same bus ran over Suresh’s head killing him instantly.
He was immediately rushed to a nearby private hospital and then shifted to Chrompet government hospital for an autopsy. The passengers of the bus and the residents of the area immediately took to the streets protesting against the bad maintenance of roads and the lack of buses running on the route. According to the police, some buses had broken down due to the rains and were not working.
The driver of the bus, Jaffer Ulla Pasha, 50, has been taken for questioning by the Selaiyur police and the Chrompet Traffic Investigation is investigating the matter. Schools in districts around Kancheepuram including Tiruvallur had declared holiday for their schools because of the rains but only Kancheepuram had schools opened on Monday.
