BJP to thwart LDF sweep of chairmen
May get Taxes standing committee chair
Thiruvananthapuram: The BJP is likely to get chairmanship of only Taxes and appeal standing committee in the city corporation as it got majority in that standing committee on Tuesday.
LDF has majority in all other seven standing committees including most significant ones. On Tuesday, UDF abstained from voting for the lone seat of women's representatives reserved in each of the eight committees.
In effect, only 79 councillors cast their vote and all reserved seats were bagged by LDF candidates who defeated BJP candidates by a margin of 44-35.
All councillors in corporation will be part of at least one standing committee. Parties themselves have divided their elected representatives among various standing committees.
The chairmen of each standing committee will be elected on December 4 on the basis of preferential votes cast by members of the respective committees.
Since LDF has only 44 candidates after the division, it won't have majority in one of the standing committees. Taxes and appeal standing committee has just 10 councillors and BJP has upper hand in it.
After division, there are 13 members each in crucial Welfare standing committee and Development standing committee.
There are 12 members each in Education-Sports standing committee, Works standing committee , Health standing committee and town planning standing committee. There are only nine members in finance standing committee.
The women candidates for each of the standing committees are Geetha Gopan (Welfare), Anju S R (Education- Sports), Shajida Nasar (Development), V Shalini (Health), Rajimol (Town planning), Priya C S (Taxes and Appeal), Geetha Kumar S (Financial) S Pushapaletha (Works). All these candidates are LDF councillors.
