Hyderabad: Nigerian fraudsters are now using the name of Amazon to cheat gullible traders in the city.  A trader from West Marredpally was cheated of Rs 36 lakh by cyber crooks in the name of Amazon Veterinary Care Products. The scammers asked him to buy cheap vet care products and sent it to Amazon in the US, promising huge profits.

The scammers sold him fake products from Mumbai and defrauded him. He realised the scam after four months.

The victim, David N. Pious, a small trader, approached the cyber crime police, and lodged a complaint.

The police caught two people and found that Nigerian scammers were behind the fraud. The scammers used two Mumbai-based courier employees to defraud David.

David said that he got a Facebook friend request from a person named Justin in July. After he accepted the request Justin asked him if he was interested in Amazon vet care products.

“The online friend told David that vet care products were very expensive in the US but cheap in India. David was told that if he buys vet care products from Mumbai and exports it to the US he can earn 50 per cent profit,” said inspector K.V.M. Prasad.

David was also given the address of Mumbai-based traders. He went to Mumbai and met a person named Hemanth, who promised to sell him the product.

“David was asked to deposit money in some bank accounts. Believing them, he paid '36 lakh. But he never got the product. All his attempts to reach Hemanth proved futile,” the inspector said.

A police team went to Mumbai and took Hemanth and another person into custody. However, it came to light that the kingpin was a Nigerian and that the duo were just acting as per directions for commission.

The police are now trying to arrest the Nigerian who engineered the fraud.
