Hyderabad: The traditional parameters of 120/80 mmHg blood pressure reading is the best for Asians according to the American Heart Association in the journal Heart Asia as the damage to the body due to stroke is very debilitating.

Last year, the parameters were changed to 140/90 mmHg as the new norm. A year later it has been found that the latter parameter does not work well for Asian patients according to clinical evaluations that are examined and noted by experts. It was found that it can actually increase the risk of stroke and management in elderly patients became very difficult.

Dr Manoj Kumar, cardiologist, said: “High blood pressure is a key risk factor for stroke. With the genes of Indians being weaker than of Europeans and North Americans the effect can be very damaging on the organs of the body. Hence a traditional approach must be kept for them.”
