KARIMNAGAR: In a shocking incident a 32-year-old pregnant woman from Odisha died due to internal injuries after she was allegedly beaten by three supervisors of a brick kiln for not coming to work. The incident happened on the outskirts of Hanmanthupeta village in Peddapalli mandal on Thursday.

The relatives of the dead woman and other workers staged a dharna in front of the assistant labour commissioner's office demanding compensation.

The deceased, Surjo Zara, belonged to Ballipouda in the Kalahandi district of Odisha. She was four months pregnant. She and her husband had come to Peddapalli in search of work four weeks back.

She could not come for work as she was suffering from fever since two days. There are no medical facilities at the kiln. The supervisors assaulted my wife for not coming to work on Thursday. I begged them not to beat her and asked them to thrash me. But they brutally kicked her stomach and beat her up with sticks and plastic pipes. She was injured seriously and died on the spot,” her husband Jithen said.

The supervisors had assaulted her up three days back too. Sources said that supervisors physically assault workers if they do not report for duties.

Peddapalli SI A. Jaganmohan said that a case of suspicious death was booked based on a complaint from Surjo's husband. He said the police were inquiring all angles regarding the incident.
