Kakinada: The daily wages of agricultural labour shot up to Rs 1 000 per day in this harvesting season. The farmers felt that such wages are very high and the farming community will not be able to afford it. They demanded the government should link agriculture with the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) to save the farmers. According to sources, the agriculture labourers have to walk carrying the paddy from the fields to roads at a distance of 300 to 500 metres. “It is a tough task for them,” said V. Nookala Rao of Draksharama village. He said that he claimed justification for their work. He said that the wages touched Rs 850 to Rs 1,000 per day for reaping the crop. It is not profitable to them.
The government should provide a facility to the farmers by linking the wages with NREGS and save the farmers for sustainable agriculture activity, said a farmer Nemani Venkata Ramarao Chowdary of Kotipalli.
Meanwhile, the farmers are drying up the crop and winnowing the grains on the roads in East Godavari district. All vehicles have to pass through the crop. In the process, it is causing inconvenience to the vehicles traversing on the road. Meanwhile, the farmers alleged that they are not able to get minimum support price for their crop. The millers are purchasing at Rs 200 to Rs 300 less than MSP per quintal.
If they carry the paddy for paddy purchasing centres, they have to bear transport charges. They want the government to bear the cost and relieve the farmers from the expenditure.
