Study on political economy in Telangana to identify core sector contributions

Hyderabad: After the intensive household survey that was conducted in August 2014 to assess the social and economic status of people in Telangana State, the state government has lined up another survey to determine the “political economy” of the state.

The survey will cover the period from 1956, when Hyderabad state was merged with AP till June 2, 2014, when Telangana State was formed. The unique survey is aimed at how different sectors performed and contributed to the economic growth of Telangana and how its income and wealth was distributed in united Andhra Pradesh. The planning department has been assigned the task.

Though the government claims that the new survey is aimed at devising schemes and programmes for ‘focussed development’ of Telangana, doubts are being raised about the real intention behind it that the Telangana government wants to expose the ‘injustice’ meted out to Telangana region in undivided Andhra Pradesh with facts and figures and how the AP governments diverted funds and resources of Telangana to Seemandhra region.

Based on the survey results, the government plans to publish a book titled “Political Economy of Telangana State”. The government feels that this book would serve as a guide for future generations to know how Telangana was discriminated in united AP.

The planning department has decided to take the assistance of the city-based Centre for Social and Economic Studies) for the survey.
