MangaluruAnnoyed with elected representatives for not opposing the controversial Yettinahole project, activists here are planning to gherao politicians and also taluk offices in the district.

The Yettinahole project is intended to divert water from Yettinahole (a tributary of Netravati River) flowing through Mangaluru and supply water to parched areas of Kolar, Chikkaballapura and Bengaluru Rural districts. Despite people of Dakshina Kannada district opposing the project, elected representatives and ministers have not raised their voice against it which has annoyed activists in the region.

“Our elected representatives have failed to convey our opposition to the project during the session. They were silent in the session and some even gave statements claiming there was no opposition to the project. We had elected them to raise our voice in the Assembly. When they have failed, we have no other option but to gherao all ministers and MLAs of the region and question them,” an activist told Deccan Chronicle.

“We plan to gherao leaders of BJP and Congress as both parties have failed to genuinely oppose the project. Instead, ministers and elected representatives are seen giving statement supporting the project,” he added. Activists are working on this and trying to bring together all organisations opposing the project to make this project a success.

Meanwhile activists of various organisations fighting against Yettinahole project plan to protest before the DC office and taluk offices in the district.
“Our peaceful protest is not taken seriously by elected representatives and officials. They had assured to organise a meeting on the project but did not fulfil their promise. There is a need to intensify the fight,” Sahyadri Sanchaya convener Dinesh Holla told Deccan Chronicle.
