Buffalo replaces beef in Hyderabad
Hotels write buffalo meat in place of beef in menu cards
Hyderabad: “Buffalo meat” is replacing “beef” in menu cards of many city restaurants. While cow slaughter is banned in Telangana, consumption of buffalo, ox or bullock meat is not. As meat of all these animals is referred to as beef, restaurants usually mention only “beef” in their menus. However, some who do not want to risk offending their customers are replacing it with “buffalo meat”.
Mr Kshitij Apte, an IT employee from the city said, “Even though there are many restaurants in Hyderabad which serve beef, I go to only those restaurants which explicitly mention buffalo meat in their menu because my religious beliefs do not permit me to consume cow meat and I do not want to take any chances. It is a good move by those who want to show sensibility towards religious beliefs of people.”
Meanwhile at restaurants that haven’t made any such distinctions and continue to mention “beef” or “steak”, some customers are seen enquiring about what exactly they are being served.
