Bengaluru: With a battle raging over the candidate for the MLC polls from Kolar-Chikkaballapura local bodies constituency, KPCC president, Dr G. Parameshwar and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah discussed the issue for more than an hour at the latter’s home office Cauvery on Monday. The party is also facing dissidence in Mangaluru and in Bengaluru. At least three prominent leaders- former MP Jayaprakash Hegde, incumbent Congress MLC, Dayananda Reddy and KLE Education Society director, V.S. Sadhunnavar have entered the fray as rebels against the officials candidates in Dakshina Kannada-Udupi, Bengaluru Urban and Belagavi respectively.
Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, a senior Congress leader observed that Mr Hegde is highly respected by voters in Dakshina Kannada while the other two leaders are known for their deep pockets. “We are worried. A damage control exercise has already commenced with party candidates of these constituencies trying to persuade these leaders to withdraw,” the source explained.
On Sunday night, Bengaluru Urban Congress candidate, M. Narayanaswamy met Mr Reddy, who has threatened to file his nomination. Mr Narayanswamy requested Mr Reddy not to contest as it would jeopardize the prospects of both of them. Meanwhile, Congress state president, Dr G. Parameshwar said he would convene a meeting of leaders from Kolar and Chikkaballpura districts on Tuesday to finalise a name for the constituency. “There is some miscommunication among our leaders due to which we have not been able to zero in on an acceptable name.” He also said he would talk to the other Congress rebels like Mr Hegde.
