New GMC chief S Nagalakshmi vows to make Guntur better
The city has been facing another problem due to stagnation of drainage water also.
Guntur: Guntur is likely to get marooned in floodwaters, in case of heavy rains, like Chennai, as the city lacks storm water drains. If the encroachments on Peethala Vagu drainage canal are not removed and widened, then it would lead to water-logging in case of cloudbursts.
During last rainy season, the city witnessed floodwater stagnation. S. Nagalakshmi, who took charge as the Guntur Municipal Corporation commissioner on Monday, said she would look into the issue and do the needful.
In fact, the GMC proposed to remove the encroachments about six months ago, when Mr K. Kannababu was the commissioner. The residents observed that whenever storm water logged in the city, the GMC officials and the state government announce future plans but conveniently forget it afterwards.
The city has been facing another problem due to stagnation of drainage water also. Drainage water stagnates on roads due to dumping of waste material and food stuff by roadside vendors, Mr. K. Siva Krishna, a resident at Arundalpet, observed.
Swarnabharathi Nagar, Siva Naga Raju Colony, Ratnagiri Colony, Suddapalli Donka, Ponnur Road, parts of Nallacheruvu, Nagaralu, Gorantla, Suryadevara Estates area and other areas in the city face drinking water problem.
The residents at these areas observed that they have been facing drinking water problem even during rainy season. Ms. Nagalakshmi said she would ensure proper supply of drinking water to every house in city. She said she would also focus on waste management in the city.
