Visakhapatnam: “We will take up permanent measures to curb beach erosion once the financial estimates and detailed project report is prepared, said Visakhapatnam Port Trust and beach erosion committee's Chairman MT Krishna Babu. He also informed that the beach nourishment works will be completed by December end.
On Monday, Alessio Giardino of 'Deltares Institute', which has assessed the report of remedial measures prepared by Chennai-based National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), Andhra University and Hyderabad Central University, has explained their observations and findings to district Collector Dr. N. Yuvraj, GVMC Commissioner Pravin Kumar and Visakhapatnam Port Trust chairman Krishna Babu in GVMC meeting hall. The assessment carried out by the Deltares of Netherlands came up with the primary conclusion that restoring the old sediment budget in the coastal system is the only way to arrest beach erosion in Visakhapatnam based on historical data as well simple shoreline modelling. They also informed that other measures can lead to additional erosion.
District Collector Dr. N. Yuvraj explained the various measures taken to arrest the beach erosion during the meeting. GVMC Commissioner, Pravin Kumar, said, “Though the coastal erosion has triggered a widespread panic, I believe we are heading towards a right direction to arrest the beach erosion permanently.”
Later, Mr Pravin Kumar had taken the officials to the RK beach area where the major erosion was occurring and explained the protective measures.
