Hyderabad: The Centre has refused to increase the number of Assembly seats in both Telangana and AP as of now and stated that fresh delimitation would be considered only after 2026.
Chief Ministers K. Chandrasekhar Rao and N. Chandrababu Naidu have been making fervent appeals to the Centre to honour the commitment made in the AP Reorganisation Act of hiking the number of Assembly seats from 119 to 153 in Telangana and from 175 to 225 in Andhra Pradesh. However, in a reply to Peddapalli TRS MP Balka Suman, Union minister of state for home affairs H.B. Chowdhary said in the Lok Sabha that such a request would not be considered till 2026 as per the Constitutional provisions in Article 170 (3).
The AP bifurcation Act was stated: “Subject to the provisions of Article 170,” there shall be delimitation of Assembly segments in both the states. Unless the Act is amended by inserting the words “Notwithstanding anything contained in Article 170.” delimitation of Assembly seats in the two states cannot take place. Though both the Chief Ministers have brought pressure on the Union government several times, it is not possible for Centre to increase the number of Assembly seats unless the bifurcation Act is amended.
