Plans afoot to avoid inundation of capital
The CRDA officials said according to the survey the Kondaveeti Vagu was spread in 421 sq kms.
Guntur: The new capital Amaravati is safe from Kondaveeti Vagu inundation. The wa-ter flowing capacity of “stream of sorrow” Kondaveeti Vagu is to be increased to 24,000 cusecs against the present 8,200 cusecs for the safety of Amaravati.
The micro level survey of Kondaveeti Vagu is progressing swiftly under which CRDA is drawing various plans to avoid submergence of the capital region during the floods and heavy rains due to overflowing of Kondaveeti Vagu.
A diversion outfall regulator was completed at Seethanagaram to divert flood waters of Kondaveeti Vagu into Krishna western canal alias Buckingham Canal popularly known as Madras Canal to release water during emergencies.
About 40 per cent of lands collected under LPS for the new capital establishment would be submerged due to overflowing of Kondaveeti Vagu every year. 12,500 acres of lands used to be in-undated during floods to Kondaveeti Vagu in Tadikonda, Amaravati, Tullur, Mangalagiri and Tadepalli mandals.
The CRDA has collected 34,500 acres under LPS in which 12,500 acres were flood prone area hence the deepening and wide-ning of Kondaveeti Vagu and releasing of water into the Buckingham Canal.
During floods of Kondaveeti Vagu, the nearby farmlands will be marooned till Neerukonda of capital region via Undavalli, Penuma-ka, Yerrabalem and adjacent areas.
The main cause of the marooning is overflowing and reversing of the flood water from Krishna so the need for outfall regulator with four locks at Rs 22 crore expenditure.
Now the flood water would be diverted into the Krishna western canal to save capital region areas. The four locks of outfall regulator would be lifted to release the water into the canal.
The CRDA officials said according to the survey the Kondaveeti Vagu was spread in 421 sq kms. This was encroached in many areas which narrowed the stream so it would be deepened and widened.
