KakinadaTelugu Desam leaders in villages and towns are causing traffic jams and inconvenience to commuters by installing party flag pillars, which has irked local party leaders too. TD is conducting Jana Chaitanya Yatras in East and West Godavari districts while party workers and leaders, involved in this task and also in unfurling their flags in public places, are doing so either within Panchayat or Revenue or Municipal land limits.

There is a Supreme Court ruling to the effect that no encroachment should be allowed on government land or sites in villages or cities. The state government issued instructions last year to demolish unauthorised constructions, such as statues, flag pillars or such structures. The government formed committees in every district to pursue the matter.

“If anyone wants to install flag pillars or statues, they should get permission from the committee, headed by the district Collector. Or else it should not be allowed,” a Panchayat official said. But no Panchayat or revenue official has objected to the installation of pillars by the TD leaders as it is the ruling party.

On Wednesday, workers from parties, like YSR Congress, Congress, the Communist parties and the newly formed Jana Sena are also going to install their  party flags beside the TD pillars.

“It will lead to disputes and clashes between the workers of various parties,” said a TD leader at Bhimavaram. He said that Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu should check such illegal installations to keep the villages peaceful.

Citizens’ Initiative secretary Duvvuri Subrahmanyam said that Municipal or Revenue officials should counsel the various party leaders in this matter and not allow illegal installation of statues or party pillars.

One official pointed out that though the party leaders were installing such constructions, they would be demolished for road widening projects in future. “We can’t do anything now,” said an official working with the revenue department.
