Wasted food half of Hyderabad’s garbage
Experts say that 10 to 20 per cent of food is also wasted in FCI and other warehouses.
Hyderabad: Half the garbage generated in the city every day is food wasted by hotels, restaurants, roadside eateries, hostels, homes, vegetable and fruit markets and even hospitals.
Ms M. Spoorthi of I Support Robin Hood Army - Hyderabad Chapter (an organization that collects food from hotels to feed the poor), said, “We have tied up with several hotels in the city who give leftover food to feed the poor on daily and weekly basis.
In November we fed 4000 hungry people on the road. The food handed over to us depends on the daily business; some hotels give us food for 100 or 150 people. We also get calls from other hotels. We have sub chapters in Madhapur, Banjara Hills and Secunderabad.
The challenge is not a lack of food — it is making food consistently available to everyone who needs it.” According to a GHMC report, there are over 20,000 registered hotels in the city and the number would be more if roadside vendors are included. Experts say that 10 to 20 per cent of food is also wasted in FCI and other warehouses.
