Illegal garbage dumping: Truck torched by locals on Magadi road
Locals set a garbage truck on fire on Magadi road on Saturday, the BBMP has said.
Bengaluru: Unable to bear the stench emanating from garbage lorries, locals set a garbage truck on fire on Magadi road on Saturday, the BBMP has said. Following the fire incident in Magadi Road, the civic agency stated that three trucks which were illegally dumping garbage on the periphery areas were seized by health inspectors near Sumanahalli. However, one of the trucks was set on fire by local residents.
“Since only segregated garbage is allowed to be carried to the garbage processing plants in Kannahalli, Seegehalli and Doddabidarakallu, the contractors resort to illegal dumping in an attempt to get rid of garbage lying on roads in core areas. During a night vigil on Friday night, health inspectors (RR Nagar) seized the lorries which belonged to Gangamma Devi Transport company, while the garbage was being illegally dumped,” the BBMP said.
The civic agency said that vigil in periphery areas has been stepped up following an increase in the number of complaints regarding illegal dumping of garbage in these areas.
“It has come to light that these lorries transported garbage and illegally dumped garbage in Mysore Road, Nayandahalli and Kanakapura Road. In the past a case has been booked against the same transport agency owner for dumping garbage in Kottigepalya,” BBMP added. It further stated that the owners of Gangamma Devi Transport were absconding and a case was registered in Kamakshipalya police station.
Police questioning locals
Some miscreants allegedly set fire to a garbage lorry parked inside a vacant land early Saturday morning in Kamakshipalya police station limits. The incident happened around 7 am in Beggar’s Colony near Summanahalli Junction.
Police officials said that they received a call from BBMP officials regarding the incident. Fire and Emergency Services personnel were called and the fire was soon doused. “The fire did not spread to the whole vehicle as the fire fighters had reached the spot in time. Six tyres of the lorry got burnt. Police have registered a case and taken up the investigation.
