KOZHIKODE: Noted businessman and philanthropist Kochouseph Chittilappilly started a 24-hour hunger strike at Kozhikode Beach on Saturday to create awareness on stray dog menace, under the aegis of Stray Dog Free Movement. This is the second such fast he is conducting against the menace.

On October 25 at Ernakulam he had conducted similar protest and is planning to conduct the same in Thiruvananthapuram.

Addressing the gathering, Kochouseph Chittilappilly said that he will fight till end for finding a solution to the stray dog menace.

“My way of protest is not a call for breaking the laws. It was the 2001 law by Maneka Gandhi which resulted in the uncontrollable increase in the number of stray dogs. Government should understand this fact and changes it so as to help the public. It iis the responsibility of government to control the menace,” he said.  He added that he is suspicious about the role of rabies vaccine companies in this issue.

“Over Rs10,000 crore worth rabies vaccine is selling in India every year and you should also read this along with the issue,” he added.

Film director Renjith who visited Chittilappilly at the venue said that it is sad that the government is yet to take permanent steps to tackle the stray dog menace and added that the people of Kozhikode will support the protest.

Actor Mamukkoya said that the laws should be meant for human beings. The fast will end at 12 noon on Sunday and at a time when people are killing each other, stray dogs causing threat to the lives of people should be killed without hesitation. The hunger strike will end on Sunday 12 PM.
