ChennaiThe Directorate of revenue intelligence has seized narcotic and psychotropic substances worth Rs 3 crore from a gang of smugglers arriving from New Delhi at Chennai Central on Saturday.

The DRI were already aware of the gang and had received information that the substances were being procured from New Delhi and concealed in a godown in Chennai to be exported to other countries.

On Saturday morning, the DRI narrowed down on the suspects after keeping close watch on them while they were travelling in the train and found out which coaches they were riding. When the train pulled up, the DRI conducted checks on the two suspects and found white crystalline psychotropic substances hidden in the bottom of their bag beneath bed sheets and garments.

The duo immediately confessed to the crime and told the DRI officers that they were carrying the contraband narcotics to the godown in George Town.

The police then tracked down the godown in Seven Wells in George town and found two men trying to remove the substances from the godown by taking them out of bubble packs and packing them into bulk sachets to avoid any suspicion from other agencies who would check them while exporting the substances.

The DRI arrested Kader Ali Jinnah, Jahir Hussain from Chennai Central and Syed Inbrahim and Shahul Hameed
from the godown in
connection to the smuggling.

The substances seized are Amphetamine, weighing 25 kgs and more than 32,000 tablets of Zolpidem, are both drugs used for recreational use and are substances listed under the Narcotic Drug and Psychotropic act, which states strict action against those in possession of these drugs. The authorities also found cash of '4 lakh bringing the total amount to three crores. The DRI are continuing their investigations.
