Bengaluru: A 71-year-old woman died after she slipped into the well of an under-construction lift at an apartment block in Kanakanagar on Monday. The deceased, Malini Srivatsa, was living on the second floor of Eshwari Enclave for the last six months with her son, Hemendra, a software engineer, and his family.

On Sunday afternoon, Malini was taking her grandson to the play area in the apartment complex. They were walking down the stairs when she slipped from the stairs and fell into the well of the lift from the second floor.

Some neighbours who saw her falling rushed to her rescue and shifted her to Baptist Hospital, where she died later, the police said.

The Hebbal police have registered a complaint under Sec 304 (A) of IPC for negligence against the contractor. “We have asked for the building documents from the owner and details of the contractor for investigations,” T.R. Suresh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North), said.

The apartment has around 500 families. “The apartment was constructed a few years ago. There are other lifts in the block, but the residents felt the need for an extra lift and the construction had begun,” an investigating officer said.

“The incident could have been averted had the building owner or the labourers ensured that there was a temporary railing or any guard rails to protect the residents. We have taken up a case of negligence and are investigating,” the officer said.
