Hyderabad: The National Human Rights Commission on Tuesday served notices to the Andhra Pradesh chief secretary and director general of police to submit detailed reports regarding the action taken to prevent the call money-cum-sexual exploitation racket that has been uncovered in the state. The commission has given the government two weeks. Earlier on Tuesday, APCC leaders including N. Raghuveera Reddy, MPs Mr J.D. Seelam, Mr .V.P. Ramachandra Rao, T. Subbirami Reddy, Jairam Ramesh and PCC leader Sunkara Padmasree met the Commission and handed over news clippings on the issue.
The Commission in a press release stated, “A call money-cum-sex racket is thriving at the cost of poor who become victims of easy loans at their doorsteps.” against guarantees of moveable and immoveable property. Interest rate usually ranges from 120 per cent to 200 per cent. Allegedly, the call money scam, busted in Vijayawada city, revealed that it was not only a call money racket but also a sex racket exploiting women sexually who took the loans. The lender can demand return of the money over a call anytime and anywhere. Hundreds of women were threatened, coerced and dragged into flesh trade if they were unable to repay.
NHRC member Justice D. Murugesan observed that the contents of the press reports and the allegations made in the complaint, if true, would amount to modern slavery. Reportedly, the gullible women or women in need of money for domestic purpose are targeted and exploited by using the call money system. The modus operandi used is to advance loans to women and housewives who are in dire need of money and when they fail to repay, the lenders threaten them. As the harassment keeps increasing, the women become defenseless and the lenders exploit them sexually by sending suggestive messages on WhatsApp and finally break them by making them to surrender. In that process, the women were forced into flesh trade,? the release said.
