Hyderabad: Sixty-four-year-old farmer K Narsaiah was leading a miserable life in his village in Medak district. When he went outside to fetch water or go to the market villagers used to hurl abuses at him and try to assault him. The residents of Ponnala village were convinced that he was a devil worshiper and a sorcerer. They blamed all unfortunate incidents on him.

The harassment increased and the police presence in the village did not help him. When cops left the villagers used to attack him again.
In October, Mr Narsaiah again approached the police. He went to the Distress Intervention Centres (DIC) set up by the district police in a local school. The police promised to help him.
The villagers were called and officials started demonstrating a few sleight of hand techniques.

It then turned into a counseling session, and at the end, the villagers were convinced that Mr Narsaiah was just an ordinary man sans evil powers.
The DIC officials solved a longstanding dispute between the villagers and a farmer, who can now peacefully live with his neighbours.
Chetana, the Distress Intervention Centres (DIC) started this year by the police have helped hundreds of victims and are having an impact in society with de-radicalisation programmes and crime prevention methods as well.

The DICs are run without any special funds from the government. Instead of cops, retired teachers, psychiatrists and social workers are running the centres using the infrastructure in government schools.
Officials say eve teasers, property offenders, and radicalised youngsters have been given counseling and helped to find livelihood through Chetana.

"The Centre is run in each circle under the supervision an inspector. Retired teachers and social workers have voluntarily come forward to work with us. It becomes more effective when teachers, who have years of experience in teaching kids, deal with victims and potential offenders," said Medak SP Ms B. Sumathi.
The SP added that several marital disputes and petty quarrels were resolved by the DIC through counseling without registration of FIRs. "DICs are now functional at Sangareddy, Sadasivepet, Zaheerabad, Patancheru, Medak-Town, Jogipet, Narayankhed, Toopran, Siddipet, Thoguta, Narsapur and Ramayampet," she said.
