Sonia, Rahul Gandhi may not seek bail in National Herald case
The party remained tightlipped on the future strategy.
New Delhi: Congress president Sonia Gandhi and son Rahul, party vice-president, will appear in a Delhi court Saturday in the National Herald case amid speculation that they may not apply for bail. The party, however, remained tightlipped on the future strategy.
Under normal procedure, once an accused is summoned, he/she has to appear before it and seek bail, that the court may grant. Else, they can be taken into judicial custody. If the accused don’t seek bail, the court can order them to be taken into judicial custody.
AICC spokesman Randeep Surjewala said: “We respect the judicial process and will submit ourselves to the majesty of the court process. The Congress president and vice-president have complete faith in the judicial process. They will act as per the advice of lawyers.”
Abhishek Singhvi, who represented the Gandhis in court, refused to say if the Gandhis would seek bail. “We cannot share our strategy.” While Congress MPs haven’t been sounded out yet about the future course of action, a source said the picture would get clearer in the next two days.
