Anti-drug awareness: ORC campaign from next year
The squad has conducted more than 2,462 raids and arrested 439 drug peddlers
Alappuzha: The anti-drugs awareness campaign, ‘Our Responsibility to Children,’ will be fully implemented in five government schools in Alappuzha town from January.
District collector N. Padmakumar, who is also chairman of district child protection unit, the principal implementing agency, reviewed the project at a high- level committee meeting at the collectorate on Friday. The campaign includes training for teachers and staff in the schools, skill development of the students and awareness camps.
The project was officially inaugurated four months ago. Mr K.K. Joseph, member, Child Welfare Committee (CWC), said the pilot project got delayed as special committees were not set up in the selected schools.
“The parents are often reluctant to attend the coordination meeting. The project would be introduced in full swing by the next academic year,” he said.
Two other projects, ‘Vimukti,’ the administration's mission to make the district tobacco and drugs-free, and ‘Clean Campus, Safe Campus’ campaign, are already on.
But Vimukti, introduced in 2010, is not functioning in most schools. The Clean Campus, Safe Campus campaign had set up Special Operation Groups (SOGs) in the 32 police stations in the district under an assistant sub-inspector.
The squad has conducted more than 2,462 raids and arrested 439 drug peddlers. It has registered 423 cases and seized drugs worth '13, 82, 467 last year, according to the police.
