Aviation academy’s security poor: Regulator
Instead the old flying club gate, near Air India aircraft engineering centre, has to be used.
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security has prescribed more security for the new hangar of the Rajiv Gandhi Academy for Aviation Technology to get access to the operational area of the Thiruvananthapuram airport.
A BCAS team conducted a safety audit of the hangar on Tuesday and suggested that it did not have enough security features. It also prescribed additional security measures like the construction of a new compound wall and installation of new lights to plug any chances of infiltration.
Also, no access to the main road side would be given to the hangar located on the academy’s new premises at Chakai ITI. Instead the old flying club gate, near Air India aircraft engineering centre, has to be used.
“We hope to meet the security requirements suggested by BCAS in another three to four weeks and get clearance for operation of the hangar at the earliest,” said the academy executive vice-chairman G Chandramouli.
A team led by BCAS regional deputy commissioner of security in Chennai Sanjay Sharma carried out the security audit along with airport director George Tharakan and otherofficials .
The hangar that was inaugurated in February 2014 could not be commissioned till now because of the lack of BCAS’s security clearance.
