Calicut University harassment: Registrar directs speedy probe
Preliminary investigations had found that the allegations were serious, VC says.
Kozhikode: The Calicut University registrar has directed the internal inquiry committees to speed up the investigation into the alleged harassment and violence against the girl students by a section of male students and people outside the campus.
Registrar Dr T.K. Abdul Majeed, in an e-mail communication on Friday, directed the women’s complaint committee and anti-ragging committee to submit the final reports soon.
Vice-Chancellor Dr K. Mohammed Basheer said that the preliminary investigations had found that the allegations were serious.
On Friday, the girl students staged a symbolic protest on the campus against the apathy of the authorities towards the complaint.
They wrote the complaints on balloons and ‘aired’ them. Meanwhile, a group of girl students submitted a letter to the chancellor saying they were not part of the complaint though they had signed the memorandum earlier.
“We collected signatures for the campaign demanding better facilities in the hostels. However, later those signatures were used by a group for their personal interests against the students of physical education department,” the letter said and urged the Governor to take action against the culprits.
The other group denied the allegations and said it was due to the pressure from the MSF some students had changed their stand.
“Our memorandum was against the anti-social elements from outside the campus and not against the male students,” said Anupama, one of the protesters.
