Kasargod: The CBI has unearthed a  Rs 49.5- lakh fraud   in the  Central University of Kerala (CUK) here in   connection with clearing huge amounts to a private security agency.

On Thursday,  CUK registrar in-charge K. C. Byju  suspended  joint registrar  S. Gopinath and  assistant registrar (finance) K. Rajeevan  for  clearing  the inflated bills submitted by the agency without any checking since 2012.

Both of them  were indicted in the chargesheet filed by the CBI.  The Kasargod-based  Matha security agency’s proprietor R. Rajendran is the third accused.

“The two officials were suspended to keep the CBI investigations free and fair,”  Mr Byju told  DC.  Sources said that the CBI probe was  in the  final stage.

Earlier, an internal investigation headed by  university vigilance officer Prasad Pannian too had found that the Matha security agency had been submitting  exorbitant bills and getting them cleared for the last three years. After the fraud came to light, the university saved Rs 2.32 lakh in security bill just for one month.

Mr Gopinath, who joined the university as deputy registrar in 2009, was registrar in-charge for a part of the period when the alleged fraud was committed.
