Music director Sreejith Edavana is toiling away at his studio, immersed in the final mixing for his new independent Hindi album, Dhuun. The album, which comprises seven songs, has been conceptualised and composed by Sreejith himself.

Sreejith himself has sung two songs in the album, Dil Ko Aaj and Tumse Nazar Nahin. The other songs have been rendered by Sooraj Santhosh, Shwashwat Singh, Saptaparna Chakraborthy and Roshni Suresh.

“The music is Hindi Pop with some Western Classical and Jazz. The theme has to do with different shades of love. The lyrics for all the songs were written by Chandan Kataria and I set them to tune. We have completed the shoot for two videos. I directed one of the visuals and the other was directed by Aaghosh Vaishnav.

“We are planning to shoot visuals for at least three more songs and actor Rajith Menon will direct one of them.”

He adds, “The album is a major production and we have spent more than average for the project. The visuals will be nothing like what you have seen before. It is experimental. This is the advantage of independent music compared to filmy music. You have more freedom and space to try out new things, and you have command over all aspects of the project. For example, we already had an idea about our visuals when we were composing the music.”

However, he also points out that the independent music scene in India is still small. “Even though independent music is becoming more popular in India now, it is still nowhere close to the international scene. The major record labels must play a more proactive role in developing this scene by giving independent music as much publicity as filmy music so that we’ll have better music projects coming out of the country. There is a lot of demand for good Indian music in the international market. In fact, we are planning to launch our album through some international websites because of this,” he adds.

Sreejith also has a handful of film projects in the pipeline. “I have two Tamil projects which I have already finished- Meow, directed by Palaniappan and Yaali, directed by Akshaya. I will also be composing for Sugeeth’s two upcoming projects with Kunchacko Bobban and Mammootty.,” he says.
