5 University of Hyderabad research scholars expelled
They are banned from the hostel and from moving in groups in the common area.
Hyderabad: Five research scholars belonging to the Ambedkar Students Association were recently expelled by the University of Hyderabad from the hostel and banned from moving in groups in the common areas in the campus over an controversy which occurred in August this year.
The expelled students alleged that Dalit research scholars were being victimised under political pressure from the BJP and right wing forces.
On August 4, N. Susheel Kumar, a student of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, had posted a message calling ASA students “goons.” He alleged that about 30 students belonging to the ASA beat him following which he had to be hospitalised.
However, the university’s Proctorial Board which conducted an inquiry could not find any proof of Susheel Kumar suffering injuries from a medical examiner. Security guards present at the scene also did not confirm the incident.
After this, the board decided to warn both groups. However, the final report of the board blamed the ASA activists for causing harm to Susheel Kumar and ordered the suspension of the five students.
Some students alleged that the change in the Proctoral Board’s decision came after BJP MLC Ramachandra Rao met former vice-chancellor Prof. R.P. Sharma and the university’s gate was blocked by members of the ABVP who were not university students.
Prof. Sharma withdrew the committee's decision and a new panel was constituted. One of the expelled students alleged, “The new committee did not conduct any fresh enquiry into the issue. No one took our version of the incident again.”
