Karimnagar: Koppula Suresh, 38, farmer and part-time electrician attempted suicide by setting himself ablaze after pouring kerosene demanding justice in a land dispute when Nizamabad MP K. Kavita was attending a development programme at Potharam village in Sarangapur mandal on Sunday.

However, police personnel on duty at the venue thwarted the farmer’s bid and detained him. The farmer is a resident of Battapalli village of Sarangapur mandal. Suresh reached the venue, demanding Ms Kavita to solve his land registration issue.

“He was carrying a bottle of kerosene. Cops grabbed the bottle before he could douse himself with the fuel and ignite it. He was arrested after being booked under Section 309 (attempt to commit suicide) of IPC,” said Jagitial DSP B. Rajendra Prasad.

Sources said that the farmer resorted to the drastic attempt as he was frustrated because revenue officials were not registering the land on his name. He had bought 10 acres of land from a member of Velma community 10 years back and had been possessor since. However, he was unable to get patta of the land, stated a resident of the village.

Ms Kavita was addressing a gathering after laying foundation stone for an agriculture market yard and warehouse to be built at Potharam village. She did not comment on the suicide bid by the farmer.

The MP spoke about steps taken to tackle drinking shortage and the ambitious 2BHK scheme of the TRS government.

Later, she proceeded to another programme scheduled in a village of Raikal mandal. Earlier, she participated in a programme held for inviting public representatives of various parties who shifted loyalties to the TRS at Metpalli town. Ms Kavita said that many were joining the TRS impressed with Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao’s performance.
