A first for dreadlocks
Miss Jamaica Sanneta Myrie made history by being the first woman ever to wear dreadlocks.
Miss Spain Mireia Lalaguna Royo may have been crowned Miss World at the ceremony that took place in Sanya, China, on Sunday, but Miss Jamaica Sanneta Myrie made history at the pageant by being the first woman ever to wear dreadlocks in the competition.
The 24-year-old, who was crowned Miss Jamaica in August this year, told BET, “I lock my hair because I identify with it. I am very much rooted in that Afro-centric nature, where we as Jamaicans are rooted."
Sanneta, who is also a doctor, was shortlisted in the top five but failed to make the cut into the top three. When asked why she should win the contest during the show, she answered, “My quest in life is... to inspire the world with my story, that no matter where you are from, your skin type your hair color, your situation — your dreams are valid.”
