Hyderabad: Months of mental and physical torture by her husband had pushed 21-year-old Roja Pandey into killing her own children. After strangulating her two kids, Roja, who is eight months pregnant, was about to commit suicide. However, seconds before she hanging herself, her husband, Mr Sumit Pandey, walked in and found the dead bodies of the kids. His intervention led to her dropping her plan and surrendering before the police.

Neighbours told the police that Roja had developed psychological issues due to the torture. She had got married when she was just 16. The early marriage and pregnancies had also taken a toll on her. The Mangalhat police, which booked a murder case against her, sent her to 14 days judicial remand on Monday. “A probe has been initiated after issuing an FIR. The woman is now in judicial remand,” said Mangalhat inspector Mr R. Srinivas.

The couple had come to Shivalalnagar one and a half years ago. “They used to live in Uppuguda earlier. After coming here, they used to sell illicit liquor,” a person from the neighbourhood said. After they stopped selling illicit liquor, Mr Sumit was jobless for a while and that had led to a series of fights between the couple. In recent months, Mr Sumit used to allegedly assault Roja despite her deteriorating health due to her pregnancy, locals said. The bodies of the two children, one-and-half-year old Chinki and four-and-a-half-year old Sumiti, were handed over to the relatives after post-mortem on Monday.
