HyderabadThe Chittoor consumer forum dismissed a plea filed by a local resident against Etihad Airways seeking Rs 60 lakh as compensation after hot coffee fell on him during a flight. N.P. Venkateswara Chowdary, 68, and his wife travelled from Bengaluru to Sao Paulo via Abu Dhabi. While travelling to Sao Paulo, Mr Chowdary alleged that hot coffee fell on him due to the negligence of the air hostess. His wife sustained severe burns and the crew administered first aid and got them treated.

Etihad contended that the complaint did not pertain to Chittoor. “Tickets were purchased from Hyderabad for travel from Bengaluru and the incident happened at Sao Paulo and the Chittoor forum has no territorial jurisdiction,” it said. It said the coffee cup had slipped from the hands of Mr Chowdary. The airline said Mr Chowdary had been provided treatment and stay in a hospital, but he had preferred to go to a hotel. The complainant travelled further as per his itinerary which indicated that the injuries were not severe, it said.

The forum ruled on December 4 that no evidence had produced by the complainant to show that he paid for treatment in India, and directed him towards a forum having territorial jurisdiction. It said there was no clinching evidence to prove negligence on part of the airline.
