Bengaluru: Reviving the debate on primacy for local language in education, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday said his government wants primacy for Kannada in education at the primary school level.
“It is true that every language we learn is an asset for us. I believe that the language should be a carrier of thought and should not become a barrier to be fought. But, the language of the land should be respected and it should get priority in early learning, as that can make the life of the child comfortable. Our government and our people want primacy for Kannada in education at the primary school level,” the Chief Minister said while speaking at the closing ceremony of sesquicentennial (150 years) celebrations of Bishop Cotton Boys' School here in the presence of President Pranab Mukherjee and Governor Vajubhai Vala.
Lauding the management of Bishop Cotton school for maintaining high quality in terms of academics, the Chief Minister called on every school in the state and the country to impart quality education to their students.
“No child should be denied education citing economic backwardness of the family,” the Chief Minister said adding that the right to education (RTE) was the best step in this regard.
Highlighting the primacy given by his government to the education sector, the Chief Minister said funds earmarked for primary and secondary education for the current year was Rs 16,204 crores, whereas for higher education, it was Rs 3896 crores.
“In all the three budgets, which I presented after assuming office as Chief Minister in 2013, I provided adequate funds to create and upgrade infrastructure and other facilities in all government run schools,” the Chief Minister added.
