Kottayam: The MG University has decided to introduce biometric punching system for the teaching and the non-teaching staff from January 1. But a few of them are opposed to the initiative and say that ensuring strict discipline for the academics will not fetch the expected results and that they should be given a flexible time.
Dr Rajan Gurukkal, former VC, says that a ‘robotic discipline’ was not good for the academic activities which are not always on the university campus.
“In the case of the office staff, the decision could be accepted. However, it will not help the academic pursuits,” Dr Gurukkal told DC. There should be a flexible time for the academics, he said.
The faculty members too wanted a clear-cut policy on the system which should be implemented after discussions with the teaching staff.
The employees organisations had agreed on the system from January 1 on a trial basis at a meeting convened by Vice-Chancellor Dr Babu Sebastian on December 17.
Dr Babu Sebastian said that along with the biometric system, the manual attendance marking will continue simultaneously till March 31 so as to check the efficacy of the punching system.
The practical difficulties in the trial run will be taken into account before linking the salary disbursement process with the new system.
The registrar will be its sole custodian. The employees have to possess the identity cards during working hours.
