Alappuzha: Janathipathya Samrakshana Samithy  leader K.R. Gowri Amma has denied the claim made by Archbishop Mar Joseph Powathil  that her late husband  and veteran communist leader T.V. Thomas had  backed the church and that he had received holy Mass before his death in 1977.

“He had never expressed any interest to receive the holy Mass, Though I could not spend time with him in his last days, I know all the details of his final days. Some people are spreading baseless allegations against T.V. Thomas,’’ said Gowri Amma.

She was speaking to mediapersons while celebrating Christmas by cutting a cake  at her residence at Chathanadu in Alappuzha town on Thursday.

The  former head of Changanassery archdiocese  made the revelation  in his autobiography published in the November edition of the publication, ‘Kudumbajyothi.’

In the  chapter titled “Sambavabahulamaya 1972(3) ,  he said T.V. Thomas secretly supported the Catholic Church in the strike held by the private college managements in 1972 against  the Achutha Menon ministry.

He also mentioned  the time when he called on the ailing minister who was  admitted to a hospital in Thiruvananthapuram. According to him, there were party activists inside and outside his room.

“I got a little time to speak with him in private.   Since his condition was serious, I told him to receive the sacrament of holy Mass (on the presumption that he has faith) to which he replied, ‘I know it, and I will do it at the  appropriate time,’” Joseph Powathil  said.
