BENGALURU: M.D. Sharath, a Deputy Superintendent of Police working with the Cyber Crime Police Station in the Criminal Investigation Department, has won the ‘India Cyber Cop Award for Excellence in Cyber Crime Investigation’.

Since 2010, the Data Security Council of India gives DSCI Excellence Awards in various categories and ‘India Cyber Cop Award for Excellence in Cyber Crime Investigation’ is one of them. There were around 50 entries this year.

The initiative is to recognise and honour an officer who has done the most outstanding investigation in solving a cyber crime. The criteria to be the winner include gathering cyber forensic evidence and following proper procedures in the investigation.  After going through all the case details of each entry, the jury finalised the case investigated by Sharath and thus selecting him for the award.

The case is related to the investigation done by the DySP, where he had arrested the accused, who had set up a fake company in the name of a reputed firm located in the World Trade Centre in Rajajinagar. The accused people were conducting interviews in the name of the reputed firm, just a floor below the genuine address. Based on a complaint, Sharath had tracked down the accused by making best use of technology and had arrested them. The case was registered in 2014.

Sharath was conferred the award recently at the DSCI-NASSCOM Annual Information Security Summit held at New Delhi. Sharath told Deccan Chronicle, “More than any award, our focus is on to ensure conviction in each and every case. The cyber crime police are constantly working on it.”

Another award

The Cyber Crime Police Station of the CID also won the second prize in the award for ‘Excellence in Capacity Building of Law Enforcement Agencies’, for its efforts in overall capacity building through workforce development, investigation & forensics capability development, skill enhancement through training and workshops.
