KOZHIKODE: Unfortunately, 64-year-old P V Abdurahman had to lay down his life to show that not everything was lost in a year when human and secular values have been under great stress. Pure humanity, this retired government servant had demonstrated with his death, has a way of brushing aside mundane calculations like risk and religion.
Abdurahman might not have saved a life but, like Noushad, he had saved for humanity a bit of hope. The incident happened on April 8, when Abdurahman was returning home after prayer at the mosque at 5.45 am in Kadalundi.
While he was walking along the platform with his friends, Abdurahman heard the piercing whistle of Mangalore-Kacheguda Express. As he turned towards the approaching train, he saw a man about to cross the track with nary a care. The man seemed strangely untouched by the approaching rumble nor the deadly horn.
People screamed at him to stop but the man went on heedless. Later, it turned out that the man was hearing-impaired. He was Raman, a vagabond tribesman.
Without the slightest hesitation, even though his friends and the people around shouted that it would be suicidal, Abdurahman jumped into the track and pushed Raman away. But the beast on the rails was faster, it had hit them both by then. Abdurahman died on the spot, whereas 62-year-old Raman died on the way to hospital.
Abdurahman's heroic act was lauded by people from different walks of life and his Panchayat and various organizations honoured the commoner who became a shining example of selfless act.
His sacrifice made him a hero not just in his village and also opened up discussions in media, despite the fact that some of those discussions went overboard.
“The sarifice of Abdurahman proves that the compassion and love are inborn in human beings. Bringing religious angle to such selfless acts should never happen," opined Swami Vedamrita Chaithanya of Matha Amritanandamayi Math.
"Such positive stories will definitely help us to inculcate those values into our lives and also to make this world a better place to live in," he added.
“It is a classic example of basic human instinct of compassion. At a time even the love affairs are being 'planned,' such selfless acts need to be appreciated and Abdurahman's act is definitely going to inspire thousands in our society," opined Kozhikode District Collector N Prasanth, who is the brain behind noted 'Compassionate Kozhikode' project.
