Hyderabad: The traffic police began implementing helmet rule in the city on Saturday. Awareness programmes were conducted by traffic police for helmet rule violators at various places. Police booked 536 two-wheeler riders for not wearing helmets in North Zone and nearly 300 persons in East Zone on Saturday.

Police penalised the riders Rs 100 for not wearing helmets, under Section 29 of the AP Motor Vehicle Act and counselled them about the importance of wearing the protective headgear.

““We are also planning to implement strict measures against repeated violators, but our first priority is to create awareness so that riders start wearing helmets even for travelling small distances,” said ACP North (traffic) A. Muthyam Reddy. The Supreme Court has issued clear guidelines on wearing helmets and directed all state governments to implement it strictly.

“The Supreme Court observed that most two-wheeler riders who died in accidents had suffered head injuries which could have been avoided had they worn helmets. Since most victims are youth, it is essential for them to follow it.” added ACP West & Central (traffic) P. Jaipal. During the special drive on Saturday, police explained to the two-wheeler riders the importance of wearing helmets and how it can be a lifesaver during accidents.
