Thiruvananthapuram: The higher education department will showcase international educational hubs on the model of Special Economic Zones during the Global Education Meet (GEM) to be held at Kovalam  on January 29 and 30.

The approach paper of the GEM has listed facilitating international academic collaborations with universities by formalising credit transfer regulations and  skill-based partnerships in higher education with international skill providers.

Academic work will be combined with skill courses relevant to industry. Autonomous colleges will be launched  with freedom to innovate and introduce academic courses as its objective.

The state government also planned  to establish an Academic City Authority as a single window authority for facilitating and regulating these new initiatives.

The  authority will be embedded in the university system through appropriate legislative changes, the approach paper said.

A campus of international standards will be set up in one of the three metropolitan cities of the state.

The GEM  will have  a round table on international collaboration with global experts, exchange of ideas on academic city and higher academic zones, exhibition of higher education facilities in the state and also networking sessions with various stakeholders.
