Maestro Ilaiyaraaja’s daughter, the music director Bhavatharini and playback singer pop Shalini have released a single titled The Rain Song as a tribute to the Chennai flood victims. Shalini says they shot the four-minute video and the whole thing happened overnight. “We were really troubled to see how the rains affected the common man and wanted to do something. It’s our way of giving back to society. I penned the song and edited it myself. Bhavatharini composed music for and we both sung it together. The song was supposed to be released three weeks ago, but somehow the process got delayed. This is purely a non-commercial album and we planned it in a way that we shouldn’t be spending much on this,” she tells DC.

Ask her what further motivated them to come up with a tribute song and, Shalini says, that while the normal lives were disrupted, Chennaiites displayed such a positive spirit and kept helping each other with whatever they had. “From those impromptu rescue teams to self-help groups, to people who opened up their homes for others, they made the city shine through the fury of the flood. The song has the tag line ‘We are one together now’,” she smiles.
Apart from the relief measures and the rescue operations by public and government servants, the footage also shows a picture of maestro Ilaiyaraaja helping people.
