THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Triggering panic, a vehicle belonging to Air India caught fire near the airport premises during the wee hours of Monday.

According to AI sources, three officials of the security wing were in the sports utility vehicle at the time of the mishap. All of them managed to escape unhurt. The fire seems to have broken out due to a mechanical defect in the vehicle, said AI sources.

Meanwhile, a fire fighting unit from nearby Chakkai fire station developed a mechanical defect and hence there was a slight delay in putting out the fire. By that time, the vehicle was almost fully charred.

Fire safety officials however said that there were certain suspicions regarding the reason for the fire and the fact that the vehicle caught fire swiftly. The security officials were returning after routine checks of the food being taken to the aircraft.
