Chennai: Amway India’s first manufacturing plant in the country, set up at an investment of Rs 550 crore, at Nilakottai in Dindigul district, has gone on stream with Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa inaugurating it.
Amway India, subsidiary of US-based Amway Corporation, has set up the factory at Sipcot Industrial Park on 50 acres. The facility will provide direct employment to 500 persons and indirect employment to 1,500, an official press release said.
The Chief Minister inaugurated the factory through video-conferencing on Monday. The US-based direct selling fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) firm set up its third manufacturing plant besides in the US and China. The 55-year-old firm has been ranked as 25th largest firm in USA by Forbes magazine. It has been engaged in manufacturing and selling health, cosmetics and consumer items. In the presence of Chief Minister, Amway management signed a memorandum on November 5, 2012, to set up a factory in Tamil Nadu at an estimate cost of Rs 300 crore.
Considering a favourable climate for investments in the state, the firm hiked the investment to Rs 550 crore and an agreement to this effect was signed at the Global Investors Meet in Chennai in September.
Over 5.50 lakh active independent Amway business owners will benefit from the products manufactured in the plant.
