BENGALURU: A 24-year-old woman was arrested along with her paramour for allegedly murdering her five-year-old daughter on Tuesday.

The arrested are Shobha (24) and Sathish (30), a flower vendor. The arrests came two months after the girl’s body was found near their house on October 30. “We initially believed it to be a case of unnatural death. We had assumed that the girl had fallen, hit her head against a boulder and died,” officials from Hebbagodi police station said.

The postmortem report, which reached the police on Tuesday morning, stated that the girl’s body had several bruises and indicated that she had been tortured for months before found dead.

Swinging into action, the police picked up Shobha, who spilled the beans after subjected to interrogation. Confessing to the crime, she said that after her husband deserted her a few years ago, she met Sathish, who was selling flowers. They met every day and got into a relationship, the police said.

“Shobha, who felt that her daughter was in her way, started beating her frequently. At times, Sathish too would join Shobha and they beat the girl. During one such beating, the girl fell down and hit her head against a boulder and died,” a police officer said.
