10,000 houses to flood-hit

Families get Rs 5,000 towards shifting expenses, Rs 2,500 for monthly sustenance.

Chennai: As part of permanent rehabilitation programme to people affected by December deluge, Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa has issued orders of allotting houses to 10,000 people who lost their houses in the flood.

The government will also distribute Rs 5,000 to families that relocated towards shifting expenses and monthly sustenance dole of Rs 2,500 for a year. Jayalalithaa issued the orders allocating the houses to five beneficiaries as token of allotment of 10,000 houses at Okkiam Thuraipakkam and Perumbakkam in Chennai.

As a part of massive relocation project, Jayalalithaa had announced permanent houses for families which lost houses in the flood. Houses will be constructed for those who resided on the banks of Adyar and Cooum rivers and Buckingham Canal. The relocation programme also intends to facilitate free flow of water in waterways.

The Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board proposed to construct 50,000 houses and in the first phase, the Board had completed constructing 10,000 houses, in multi storey buildings, for the persons who resided on banks of river Adyar. Five families received the orders from the Chief Minister. The houses have all the amenities including power and drinking water connections. The relocation centre also has various amenities including road, shops, stormwater drain, school, PHC and bus connectivity.

The government has also announced that families that relocated would get an allowance of Rs 5,000 towards shifting expenses and monthly sustenance dole of Rs 2,500 for a year. Employment opportunities will be made available to them by conducting job mela and imparting vocational training.
