There is a slight fall in the number of tourists compared to last year due to the Chennai floods. Last year, while there were 7,900 tourists in December, this year so far there have been 6,576 tourists. Also due to high entry tax and other taxes for tourists in the state, North Indian tourists are being diverted to Sri Lanka this year by tourist guides. These tourist guides say that if tourists have to spend Rs 35,000 to visit Karnataka they would rather prefer to go to Sri Lanka spendingthe same money.
At least ten percent are foreign tourists, the majority of them from Europe, including countries like France and Germany. As high as 60 to 70 percent of the tourists are from Kerala and Tamil Nadu and 20-30 per cent from North India, Mr Ashok said.
