IRS officer under CBI scanner
The CBI’s Tamil Nadu unit has registered a DA case against the IRS officer and eight others.
NEW DELHI: The CBI on Wednesday registered a ‘disproportionate assets’ (DA) case against M. Krishnaswamy, an Indian Revenue Service officer (IRS), and carried out searches at 14 locations in Tamil Nadu, including Chennai.
According to sources, a case has been registered against Krishnaswamy, a Commissioner of Income Tax ranked-officer of 1988 batch presently posted as Director (Investigation) at Settlement Commission (Chennai) and eight others for alleged possession of disproportionate assets.
Talking to reporters here, a CBI spokesperson said, “The officer and his family were in possession of assets to the tune of Rs 6.1 crore. The other accused (family members of the officer and certain benami property holders) had allegedly abetted him in the commission of the offence. It is further alleged that the public servant had acquired huge assets in the name of his immediate family members and benami holders in Chennai and various other places in Tamil Nadu including his native village near Palani (Tamil Nadu)”.
The CBI’s Tamil Nadu unit has registered a DA case against the IRS officer and eight others. They will soon be called for questioning. Sources further claimed that the officer had allegedly invested in ‘benami’ property and some investments in movie business through proxies. The agency sleuths conducted searches at 14 location in Chennai and other places in Tamil Nadu in connection with the case.
The CBI officials have recovered documents pertaining to property worth several crores of rupees, locker details, investments in shares and in a private firm and also investments in another company during searches. “The agency sleuths are now scrutinising documents recovered during searches”, sources said.
