Hyderabad: A pedestrian was carried on the roof of a car for 20 km after he was hit by the same car and landed on its roof in Nalgonda on Saturday. He was found dead when the car was finally stopped.

The incident took place at Choutuppal when Anant Reddy, 70, a farmer, was crossing the road. He was hit by a car heading towards Suryapet. Reddy was a resident of Narketpally in Nalgonda district located on the Hyderabad Vijayawada highway. On Saturday at around noon, as he was crossing the road to reach his house from his field, he was hit by an overspeeding white Maruti Ritz with registration number AP 09BY 2725. As the car was moving very fast, Reddy was catapulted on to its roof.

Fearing public anger, driver Md Raheem Khan, who deals in wristwatches, drove the car for about 20 km before being stopped. Khan, 25, a native of Nampally in Hyderabad, was travelling to Suryapet along with his colleague Md Shahbad Khan to deliver wristwatches to dealers.

Passers-by who noticed the accident, alerted the cops. “He hit Anant Reddy and sped away. He travelled nearly 20 km with the body on the roof,” said Narketpally SI Ch. Motiram.

Police alerted the neighbouring police station and when Khan reached the outskirts of Aitipamula village in Kattangur mandal, they were intercepted. But by then Reddy was dead.

Based on a complaint by the victim's relative B. Bhoopal Reddy, an accidental death case was registered and the body handed over to the family after post-mortem.
